“Your body has a lot to tell you about the rest of your life.”

– Dr. Nina Sundaram

Days after completing her first year of medical school, Illumine founder Dr. Nina Sundaram was en route to Cuba to spend the summer immersed in the under-resourced nation’s public health system.

It would be a transformative experience and ultimately, the inspiration to build Illumine.

“When you don’t have the resources to treat sick people, preventive medicine is everything,” Dr. Sundaram notes. “In Cuba, you may be quite poor, but you have a neighborhood doctor who visits your home routinely, who knows you, knows your family, knew your parents and their medical histories. It’s engaging, it’s personal—a positive and joyful approach to healthcare,” she concludes. “It’s what preventive medicine can be. And it works.”
